We may downsize or cut down on salaries- Nigerian Governors Forum

Governors under the umbrella body of the Nigerian Governors Forum say they may have to downsize the number of Civil Servants on their payroll or reduce the salaries of civil servants following the dwindling revenue generated from the Federal and state levels.

Rising from their meeting in Abuja yesterday November 18th, one of the governors, Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state who spoke with newsmen, said there was no way the country could continue with a situation where expenditure is more than income.

Akwa Ibom Governor, Emmanuel Udom, Visits Vincent Enyeama In Ika

Awwww... That's nice. Vincent Enyeama needs so much support right now, after the death of his mom, heard, they were quiet close. Dude shared the pic on his instagram and captioned it..
" God bless you, His Excellency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State for your time with our family. I was honoured and humbled by your presence. Thank you for coming to Ika."

Why I Removed Vincent Enyeama As Super Eagles Captain - Sunday Oliseh

Hmmm... Super Eagles is playing today in Belgium, against Congo, in a friendly match, so, I wanna be nice and not say anything about the earlier drama between Vincent Enyeama and Sunday Oliseh, but I'm gonna say this, of course referring to Sunday, 'oga, if you were once known to be DISRESPECTFUL, RUDE, then, don't come looking for respect.
I love you, no doubt, but I expected you to disappoint us, (Nigerians), by showing that, you've outgrown your temper, but no, you didn't. I was a little kid in Primary School, maybe 7years or so, when I read about you and your rudeness, that defined my mindset/idea towards you. Please, change this idea of you in my head. Love you, sir.
Now, back to the matter, Sunday Oliseh, while speaking on Brila radio, said, the altercation is a normal disagreement in a family. The Super Eagles boss said..
"I want a captain who is disciplined. A leader who can motivate other players. A player who comes to camp early. I want a young player not a retiring player as captain. And Ahmed Musa is that player. He is my captain."
"When you have a new government like our honourable president just came in, he's picked his ministers and you have your philosophy and you have your way of working.
"As a coach I have looked at the team and I have looked at Nigeria going forward. We need a captain who will think of staying with Nigeria for several years to come, who is regularly in the front.
"...and Ahmed Musa did a great job for us in Tanzania under very difficult circumstance. He is a very responsible player and he is the captain of the team. So he is the captain of the team, there is no question of a tussle.
"The fact that I would like to have somebody (as captain) who is thinking of playing now and not somebody who is preparing for retirement or thinking of life after-football. And I think it's time we had peace and quiet around the Super Eagles.
"That is why I am glad that most of the players here are finding ways to work as a team because I get the feeling now that they are aware that they are representing 170 million people"
He explained that the camp was in good mood ahead of today's match.
"The players have shown their desire and we are working on stringing them together.
"It is unfortunate that the home-based players are yet to be given visas but we are hopeful that they will be here for the second match against Cameroon on Sunday."

Abuja: Reps Move To Tackle Karu/Nyanya/Mararaba Gridlock

The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to commence expansion work on all auxiliary routes into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This came following a motion moved by Rep. Gaza Gbwefi (Nasarawa-PDP) on the need to address incessant gridlock on Karu/Nyanya/Mararaba road.
Gbwefi, representing Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency of Nasarawa state, expressed concern on the constant traffic gridlock being experienced by motorists and commuters along the Karu/Nyanya/Mararaba axis.
He said that the gridlock had often times resulted in avoidable accidents and a major occurrence with resultant toll on the populace living in the axis.
According to him, a large proportion of the labour force that service the manpower needs of the FCT residing on the axis had been greatly affected by the gridlock.
The motion was adopted unanimously and the House called on the FCTA as well as Nasarawa State Government to relocate the night market along the road and also provide car parks and bus stops to ease traffic.

ayose asks Ekiti senators to support Fayemi's ministerial nomination

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has asked Ekiti state lawmakers to ensure his predecessor and ministerial nominee, Kayode Fayemi have a hitch free screening exercise at the floor of the senate come 13th October 2015 when screening of the country's ministerial nominees will commence. Fayose made the call while speaking with student leaders of Ekiti origin at the conference hall of the governor's office yesterday October 7th.
"Ekiti is my number one priority, I called all the house of reps and senators that went to Abuja from here, some people petitioned the national assembly, stating how Fayemi sunk Ekiti into heavy debt, I have told the members not to do that.
It is God that judge people, not we. You must support him there. If a child would die, it shouldn't be from the mother. They should not go to the house and oppose Kayode Fayemi, NO, they must never do that. An Ekiti man is an Ekiti man. I appeal to everybody, you must support him. All former ministers from here in the time past practically really have nothing to show because we pull one another down, we pull one another down... We must not pull them down. If they are behaving like that, we must live a better life. Promotion does not come from man but from God Almighty"he said.

Over 100 terrorists, 7 soldiers killed in Yobe clash

Ammunition, arms and explosive devices recovered by Nigerian soldiers from Boko Haram members, after their foiled attack of a military base in Goniri, Yobe State. On the right is the terrorists’ hideout.
The Nigerian army yesterday said over 100 Boko Haram terrorists were killed in an attempt to invade a military base in Goniri, Yobe State.
Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman, said the insurgents made a futile attempt on the 120 Task Force Battalion troops located at Goniri.
He said the attack was carried out by fleeing terrorists “in a great sign of desperation and to create an impression that they remain relevant.”
He added that during the encounter troops successfully repelled the attack and inflicted heavy casualty on the invading terrorists as all of them were killed.
“On the last count over 100 terrorists bodies were seen. Unfortunately however, seven of our gallant soldiers paid the supreme price while defending our fatherland, while one officer and 8 soldiers were wounded in action,” Colonel Usman stated.
He said the troops recovered a sizeable number of arms, ammunitions and other equipment from the terrorists.
These he said included 1 General Purpose Machine Gun, 2 Rocket Propelled  Grenades, 9 AK-47 rifles and Belted rounds of 7.62 (NATO) ammunitions.
Others were various wires used for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), 7 Primed IEDs, different types of Spanners and a Torch Light.
He said troops had consolidated on the encounter and were more determined to defend their location and continued to serve as blocking force to any fleeing terrorists from the Nigerian Air Force aerial bombardments and artillery fire.
He also said troops of 21 Brigade on fighting patrol from Bama to Ngurosoye, destroyed Boko Haram terrorists camps along the axis.
Usman added that while on patrol, the soldiers came across some terrorists’ hideouts that also served as fabricating area for IEDs and terrorists’ training area.
He said another patrol team along Bama-Kawuri axis discovered and exhumed IEDs and wires for detonation.

Temper Justice With Mercy, Suswam Begs Ortom

[Benue News]
Immediate past Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has reached out to his successor, Samuel Ortom, to save him from the embarrassment of an indictment by the Judicial Commission and Administrative Panel of Inquiry.

The Commission set up by Ortom to probe his predecessor is expected to commence public setting soon in Makurdi.

It was gathered that the former governor met with Ortom last Thursday at the Government House Makurdi for several hours behind closed doors.

Suswam was reportedly accompanied to the meeting, which extended to the early hours of Friday, by his elder brother, Dr. Terkula.

A source at the meeting, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that Suswam denied recent media statements where he about allegedly spoke “tough” against the administration of Ortom.

Suswam was reported to have made disparaging remarks against the administration of Governor Ortom in a speech at the funeral of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Atoza Ihindan.

He reportedly asked Ortom to extend the probe of his administration to include the sales of Benue Cement Company to Dangote industries Limited.

The former governor was also said to have pointed out that though security votes had increased to N500million, the state continues to reel under insecurity.

He was said to have further challenged the Ortom’s administration to publish monies collected from the federation account.

But Suswam was said to have denied making such statements at the meeting with Ortom.

He was alleged to have asked his successor to temper justice with mercy.

Speaking on the development, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain from Benue South, Dr Omale Ogwuche, faulted the meeting.

He dismissed it as selfish, saying Suswam should have attended with other stakeholders instead of going alone with his elder brother.

NO HIDING PLACE FOR CRIMINALS IN #BENUE - ORTOM

Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has vowed to ensure that those responsible for the recent murders in the state were apprehended and brought to book.

He spoke at the burial of the District Head of Utange, in Ushongo local government area, Chief Joseph Kumbur, who was assassinated by unknown gunmen on April 9, 2015.

Governor Ortom, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Colonel Edwin Jando, retired, re-echoed his administration's resolve to provide security for the people of the state stressing that those behind the gruesome murder of Chief Kumbur will be apprehended and punished to serve as deterrent to others.

He said his administration was determined to curb violent crimes in the state by embarking on the ongoing amnesty program adding that a list being compiled by security agencies indicated that thousands of automatic rifles were in the hands of illegal possessors who had been identified.

Governor Ortom stressed that at the expiration of the program at the end of August, 2015, those who fail to turn over the illegal arms in their possession will be chased to their hiding places and arrested.

In his funeral oration, the Tor Tiv, Dr. Alfred Akawe Torkula, condemned the rate at which prominent sons of Tiv land were being murdered describing the development as worrisome and unacceptable.

Dr Torkula who was represented by the Ter Ushongo, Chief Ambrose Iyortyer appealed that those responsible for the killing of Chief Kumbur be brought to justice.

Chief Iyortyer in his capacity as Ter Ushongo stated that to demonstrate abhorrence for the murder all the royal fathers who attended the funeral resolved neither to taste food nor water at the event.

He charged the family of the deceased to take proper care of dependants left by the late District Head.
In his valedictory sermon, Reverend Jacob Imunan, Pastor of NKST Faajir, likened the death of Chief Kumbur to that of Abel in the Bible who was killed by his brother Cain pointing out that the blood of the deceased, like that of Abel, was crying out to God for justice.

Army forces Al-Mustapha to retire

Maj. Hamza al-Mustapha
A former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, Maj. Hamza al-Mustapha, has been compulsorily retired from the Army.
His compulsory retirement, according to a military source, arose from his unavailability in the Army for a period of over 14 years, while he was away to face trial over the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, a wife of the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola.
Our correspondent on Wednesday sighted a copy of the retirement letter sent to Al-Mustapha from the Army Headquarters.
Following Abacha’s death on June 8, 1998, Al-Mustapha was arrested in October of the same year for the murder of Kudirat, an offence for which he was tried for 14 years.
The Federal Government also pressed other charges which did not succeed against Al-Mustapha during the period.
He was subsequently sentenced to death for Kudirat’s murder by a Lagos High Court in Igbosere on January 30, 2012, but he was discharged and acquitted on July 12, 2013 by a superior judgment of the Court of Appeal in Lagos.
But his letter of compulsory retirement indicated that the Army Council took the decision to force him out of service at its meeting held on August 5, 2013, more than a year after the Court of Appeal acquitted him.
The letter sighted by our correspondent on Wednesday was however dated July 14, 2014 and it put the period the former Head of State’s CSO was in the army at 33 years and 11 days.
It further indicated that the decision of the Army Council to retire him was based on the provisions of Paragraph 09.02(c)(5) of the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service for Nigerian Armed Forces 2012 (Revised).
The reason for his compulsory retirement, “undeployability arising from restructuring and/or lack of establishment,” is the fifth in the list of nine conditions as stated in the law which the Army Council can based such a decision on.
The letter with reference number, AHQ MS/G1/300/226, commended him for demonstrating “good conduct in the discharge of your duties” throughout his service in the army.
The letter partly read, “You are authorised to retain your substantive rank of Major. You are also entitled to gratuity and pension as well as Certificate of Military Service and Retired Officers’ Identity Card.
“You are entitled to your ceremonial dress, service dress and mess kit. However, you should wear uniforms corresponding to your rank at the time of retirement only when you are invited for military ceremonies; military weddings; memorial services of National Day celebration and Regimental dinners.”

Fulani herdsmen return to Falae’s farm, destroy crops

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae
CHIEF Olu Falae’s farm in Akure has again been attacked by Fulani herdsmen, barely two weeks after the herdsmen kidnapped the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and kept him for four days.
The herdsmen reportedly moved in their cattle into the farm situated at Ilado on the outskirts of the state capital at about 2am on Monday and destroyed a one-kilometre stretch of maize plantation.
Manager of the farm, Mr Bruno Akhigbodemen, who conducted journalists round the farmland on Wednesday, said the herdsmen ran away before help could come after the workers they met in the farm had raised the alarm.
Akhigbodemen said, “The destruction visited on the farm is devastating. They invaded the farm and made their cows to eat and destroy our maize that covers over one kilometre.
“They came around 2am; one of the workers raised the alarm but before help could come they had destroyed the farm and fled. We quickly informed Baba (Falae) who immediately reported to the police.”
The farm manager said some detectives were thereafter drafted to the farm.
But the spokesman for the state police command, Mr. Femi Joseph, told one of our correspondents on Wednesday that he had not been briefed on the incident.
Our correspondent who visited Falae’s house on Wednesday was told the ex-SGF and National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party was resting and not available to talk.
His Personal Assistant, Capt Moshood Raji, who also confirmed the attack, said, “Baba can’t be reached on telephone now because we just returned from the farm now and he is taking his rest.”
Raji also said that the elder statesman had reported the case to the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mike Ogbodu, and that “he (CP) had directed the State CID to move in.’’
‘‘We searched the people who were there yesterday but we could not arrest anybody. But the villagers told us that they saw them moving out of the farm on Monday morning. They said they were moving towards Owo area,” he added.
Curiously, the CP denied knowledge of the attack when contacted by one of our correspondents on Wednesday.
“I am not aware that any herdsmen attacked Chief Falae’s farm again, I’am not aware,” he said.
Falae, also a one-time finance minister, was kidnapped from his farm by suspected Fulani herdsmen on his 77th birthday on September 21 and was not set free until four days later.
He said he was tortured by his abductors and that ransom was paid before they set him free.
He also said his abductors threatened to kidnap him again if he started saying “rubbish” after his release.
When a former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Alani Akinrinade, paid him a visit after his release, Falae had said, “There were six of them with three or four guns and every half an hour or so they will say, ‘Baba we are going to kill you; if you don’t give us money we are going to kill you.’
“On Wednesday one of them came and said, ‘look we are going to leave here on Thursday morning. Since we cannot leave you here alone, if we don’t get what we want, we are going to kill you.
“And they said they gave me until 3pm, and if at 3pm they don’t get the money, they would execute me. I thank God that at 21 minutes to 3pm, one of them came and said, ‘the money don complete.’
We’ll not fold our arms –Afenifere
The latest attack has attracted the anger of the pan-Yoruba group, Aferenife, which said further attacks would not be tolerated.
The Ondo State government also condemned the attack, which it described as “despicable.”
Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, said if nothing was done, the Fulani herdsmen could become too powerful and start oppressing the Yoruba just as they were doing to other ethnic groups in Benue, Plateau and Nasarawa states.
He said, “It is unfortunate that up till now, neither President Muhammadu Buhari nor the Federal Government has made a statement on the issue. We cannot sit down and continue to fold our arms. We cannot continue to allow these Fulani herdsmen to destroy our crops, kill our people and rape our women in the name of one Nigeria.
“Do they expect us to fold our arms and let this continue? This is what they have been doing all over the country. This never happened during the First Republic or the Second Republic.”
Adebanjo said the issue was one of the issues discussed at the National Conference. He, therefore, blamed the government for failing to find a solution to the crisis.
“Can’t the government confine them to grazing fields? Must we be compelled to continue to accommodate visitors that continue to kill and attack their hosts? We cannot continue to live together at the expense of our lives and property.”
The spokesperson for the Afenifere, Mr Yinka Odumakin, said all Yoruba leaders under the aegis of the Oodua Foundation, would meet in Ibadan on Thursday (today) to take a stand on the matter.
He said the Yoruba had become tired of the frequent attacks and could no longer condone the situation.
He said, “All Yoruba groups will converge on Ibadan to discuss this matter. We have had enough. The Fulani have declared war on us by returning to Chief Falae’s farm. There will be an appropriate response from the meeting. We have had enough and Nigerians must address this issue once and for all.”
Another Afenifere leader, Senator Femi Okurounmu, told one of our correspondents that he was aware of the fresh attack on Falae’s farm.
He said he could not understand why the Fulani would continue to attack peace-loving Yoruba. He, however, said he would not comment until after the Ibadan summit.
The founder of the Oodua People’s Congress, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, said he was not aware of the latest attack on Falae’s farm.
He, however, said the Fulani herdsmen would regret their actions if they continue to take the Yoruba for granted.
“I am not aware of this latest encroachment but I think Yoruba leaders should not take this assault lying low. If the Fulani want war, they will get war,” he said.
The Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Mr Kayode Akinmade, condemned the act, saying it was despicable and unacceptable.
He said, “It is despicable and unacceptable, we condemned it in its entirety and we believe that the security agencies will take action appropriately to nip further attacks in the bud.
“The first time they attacked Chief Falae’s farm they kidnapped the elder statesman and again they are now coming back to destroy the farm. They want to desecrate our land, this is unacceptable.’’
He then enjoined the security agencies to take a drastic step to ensure the safety of the lives and properties of the people of the state.
